Are You Talking About the News?
Discussing current events is challenging. Many of us wrestle with how best to engage in conversation around difficult news. In the age of information, there is no shortage of contradictory “hot takes” and perspectives. Where do you get your news? Who do you talk with about current events?
Our team has been having these conversations and and some over the past few months. We talk about the news. We reflect on how to talk about the news. And, always, we discuss how to facilitate great conversations with young people – about the news.
Current events discussions offer opportunities to build critical thinking and social awareness for us all. Classroom educators are skilled at incorporating yesterday’s news into today’s lesson plans. After-school professionals, parents/guardians, and other adult allies often find ourselves in more spontaneous conversations. How do you talk about current events with the young people in your life?
We are talking about the news with each other and with young people using this resource. Download the facilitation plan and let us know how your conversations go!
