Youth & Adult Partnership

Have you ever felt like an adult just didn't get you? Or worse yet, had he or she tell you what you felt or thought? Or maybe you're an adult working with a youth group that you feel is looking to you for all the answers.

Youth and adults, people from different generations, different experiences can create some of the strongest and most effective teams. MYAN believes that when youth and adults learn from and share things with each other, they can create change far more effectively than when adults alone make the decisions. A true partnership is not always easy to create or maintain, though. It takes time, commitment and understanding.

This News to Use edition is an introduction to the very big topic of youth and adult partnerships, which we hope you will take some time to explore. Think about how and where you find youth and adult partnerships happening in your life: at home, at school, on a town committee. Take some time to think about how to understand and appreciate these partnerships more in order to make the world a better place.

Quote of the Month
"The young, free to act on their initiative, can lead their elders in the direction of the unknown. The children, the young, must ask the questions that we would never think to ask, but enough trust must be re-established so that the elders will be permitted to work with them on the answers." ~ Margaret Mead
Partnership Leads to Prom Safety

Every year, students are faced with the excitement and preparation for Prom week. While picking out dresses and tuxes are the traditional exercises, it is also important to be aware of the issues your school and community are facing. At my school, Old Orchard Beach High School, our Natural Helpers took this time to collaborate with the faculty and community.

In order to ensure a safe environment and raise awareness about safety issues, our youth partnered with the Underage Drinking Task Force, part of Communities for Children. Sharing the stage with Steve Rowe, the Maine Attorney General, we were able to give a youth perspective to the parents and business owners at the Alcohol Summit held in our cafeteria. All of the parents were eager to hear what our Natural Helpers group was doing to support their efforts. While we were raising awareness within the school by speaking daily on the intercom and providing such tools as the Convincer and a real crashed car on our school grounds, Communities for Children was working to send letters to all of the local hotels and motels about the dangers and consequences of renting to teens during Prom week. The parents and faculty seemed reassured that there were students backing their decisions. They appreciated our efforts, and we had yet another safe, accident-free Prom week.

In our case, it was important to have community partnership between youth and adults, not only for parents of schoolchildren, but for business owners and the children themselves. Our group was able to partner with adults, and by doing so, we created a positive, fun Prom week for our students and reassured adults about student safety.

Nominate a Youth Advocate of the Year!

The Youth Advocates of the Year Awards, sponsored by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, honor the outstanding work of young advocates who have taken the lead in holding the tobacco industry accountable for their efforts to market their products to youth.

These young activists are fighting to protect their peers, their communities and the nation from the dangers of tobacco use through public education efforts, student-to-student training and outreach to policymakers. Many have worked to change policy at all levels to limit youth access to tobacco, protect people from secondhand smoke, and ensure that tobacco prevention programs continue to receive funding. Through all of their work, these youth inspire and motivate other young people to join them in their efforts.

Applications must be postmarked by the February 2, 2007 deadline.
