"Guard your light and protect it. Move it forward into the world and be fully confident that if we connect light to light to light, and join the lights together of the one billion young people in our world today, we will be enough to set our whole planet aglow."

MYAN's
News to Use

Transition Time

June 2010

School is out, summer is in, June can be time of transition in many ways.  Here at MYAN, we have a few bittersweet transitions to share.  Our intrepid VISTA, Stephen Potts, has completed his year of service.  We miss his hard work and humor, but we wish him all the best in his new role as a massage therapy student. It is also time to say goodbye to our college interns--read more about that below in the Youth Tips Corner. And the final transition to share is that MYAN's News to Use is going on summer vacation. (only News to Use will be on break, not all of MYAN.)  News to Use will be spending some time hiking, relaxing at the beach, reflecting on the year, and figuring out what to do better next year to be the most helpful possible resource it can be. Please take this quick survey to help News to Use with its reflections!

's News to Use is on vacation, but MYAN is not!  We will be here all summer, kicking off our youth leadership program, planning for the fall, and hoping to talk to you!  Call us if we can be of assistance in any way!

IMPORTANT TRAINING UPDATE
We heard your feedback and  are changing our training system starting in the fall of 2010. Instead of scheduling specific topics in specific areas, we will come to your school/organization and train on a topic you choose from our menu.  We'll send out a formal announcement in the next month with all the details, but wanted to let you know before the school year ends that we plan to be as flexible as we can next year in meeting you and your group's needs.

The Maine Coalition for Excellence in Education is sponsoring a Gubernatorial Debate in October – but not just any debate. This debate will be student driven and student led.  We’ve got an exciting team of young leaders from all over the state already working to plan an interactive forum that will happen in one place but be accessible to "satellite sites" all over the state but we need you to make it the most dynamic, exciting, and talked about event of the campaign season.  Email Aymie Walshe or call her at 355-5236 to get involved.

Show Me the Money
http://www.bestbuy-communityrelations.com/local_donations.htm: Best Buy teams across the United States select non-profit organizations that provide positive experiences to help teens excel in school, engage in their communities, and develop leadership skills.  Special consideration will be given to programs that serve a diverse population in local or regional communities, build social, academic, leadership, and/or life skills in early adolescents (primarily ages 13-18); show positive results against a demonstrated community need; and reach at-risk children in working families.  Maximum award: $10,000.  Deadline: July 1, 2010.

OK, so this one is about money for someone else, but please keep reading...There is a group in the Lewiston/Auburn area called YADA (Youth+Adults+Dialogue=Action).  YADA has been around for a few years and is an excellent model for genuine youth-adult partnership and dialogue.  YADA is hoping to take their work to the next level by securing funding to create a much needed teen center in the L/A area.  To do so, they need your votes!  Show your support for Maine youth and youth-adult partnership by voting here every day in June.  You do have to register with the website to vote, but it only takes a second.  If you have questions, email Molly Ladd.

See the Raise Money section of the new website for lots of additional funding sources & ideas!
Build Your Skills
Civic Enterprises has released its latest study, Raising Their Voices: Engaging Students, Teachers, and Parents to Help End the Dropout Epidemic,  A critical finding of this report is that one of the first steps towards decreasing the high school dropout rate is facilitating genuine dialogue between students, teachers, and families.  There are fascinating quotes and examples that illustrate some profound disconnect between youth and adults, as well as some simple suggestions for building those bridges.

And for some resources closer to home, check out the R3 Youth Development Institute, "Relationship, Relationships, Relationships, The Key to Success in Schools and Communities" (Formerly the Dropout Prevention Summer Institute) happening July 26-28 at the University of Maine in Orono.  Plenary speakers include Peter Benson, Karen Pittman, Dr. Gil G. Noam, and Karen Williams.  Over 30 workshop presenters (including MYAN!) will be sharing best practices, implementation strategies, and engaging youth in the process. Youth Tips Corner

Hi HMPs!

The CDC Office on Smoking and Health and the Center for Tobacco Policy Research at Washington University in St. Louis are developing a series of user guides for the State and Community Interventions category for Best Practices. The latest publication in the series focuses on youth engagement and the role youth play in advancing policy as part of a comprehensive tobacco control program. Check out Youth Engagement: Best Practices for some great ideas about why, how, and when to involve youth in anti-tobacco work.  Also included are several concrete and inspiring examples from around the country.
June is the month we have to say farewell to our spectacular college interns.  A HUGE thank you to Jay Vachon, Chelsea Schoen, and TJ Williams (pictured above) for all their hard work and energy this year.  Chelsea will begin and Jay will continue at Southern Maine Community College this fall in the paramedicine program, a step towards their long term goals of becoming nurses.  TJ will continue at USM as an Information Technology student and as the vice-chair of the undergraduate student senate. Chels, Jay, and TJ, among many other fantastic professional skills such as hula hooping and diverse musical awareness, cite public speaking, facilitation, time management, and organization as workplace skills they will take away from their internship experience at MYAN.
